Ribbon Awareness Essay

Support Animal Cruelty Awareness
Since the dawn of time animals have been considered companions for humans. It is our responsibility as a society to raise awareness to the neglect and cruelty that many animals endure. On a database called Pet-Abuse.com, Animal Cruelty cases are logged and there are currently 19,265 cases listed. (Gianotto) That is out of control so help the cause today by educating yourself on Animal Cruelty by wearing the purple animal cruelty awareness ribbon, donating money through the proper local channels, or volunteering your time at a local humane society because these animals are helpless on their own.
To understand the cause you must first define what Animal Cruelty is because what seems cruel to one person may not be cruel to another based on their own personal interests and beliefs.  According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals , “While much progress has been made for animals in our society, particularly during the past 50 years, the continuing absence of a widely accepted definition of cruelty to animals remains an enormous obstacle.” (Kilroy) To help fight Animal Cruelty the ASPCA was formed and they defined it as, “Acts of violence or neglect perpetrated against animals are considered animal cruelty.”(ASPCA.org) Furthermore, they divided Animal Abuse into two categories; Intentional and Unintentional. Intentional would be when someone purposely harms an animal causing injury or death, such as the violent training and culling methods of large scale dog fighting organization. Unintentional would be considered all forms of neglect including failing to meet basic necessities of food, water, shelter, and appropriate veterinary care.  The ASPCA passed a law in 1866 that made dog fighting and all cruelty to animals illegal.(ASPCA.org)
Animal abuse has had a long and bloody history. In ancient times, barbaric fights to the death were popular involving both humans and animals alike. In the United States cockfighting and dogfighting go back to the 1800’s. Cockfighting in the south was very popular and even became part of the southern culture.  The ASPCA outlawed all forms of animal cruelty, but these blood sports are still occurring in dangerous frequency. Underground dog fighting organizations have been unearthed like the recent Michael Vick scandal. This only makes the fact that the problem is not yet fixed more real. This incident occurred in 2007 involving Michael Vick, a well-known professional football player. It gained mass media attention because a well-known individual was involved.  The ASPCAs’ investigation team got involved in the case against Michael Vick. According to an article on the ASPCA website, the Investigation concluded that Michael Vick and two other individuals were involved in an underground dog fighting organization which caused him to serve 23 months in prison, 3 years of probation, and 1 million dollars into a fund used to rehabilitate and care for the animals. He also was dropped from the NFL. This is a good example of how the ASPCA gets involved to help end Animal Cruelty.
The biggest problem with animal abuse is that there is not enough awareness and cases fail to be reported. According to the Humane Society’s’ website, “Most cases are never reported, and most animal suffering goes unrecognized and unabated.”(Humanesociety.org) The whole purpose of the purple ribbon is to help fight Animal Cruelty by creating awareness so that the problem can be brought out of the shadows. There are many hotlines available across the country where you can report suspected animal abuse to the proper authorities. Without the help of caring individuals to support the cause the problem will continue to go undiagnosed and only the animals will suffer. I am asking you today to help out the animals and support the cause of Animal Cruelty by wearing the ribbon, donating money, or volunteering in whichever means you can.
Through organizations like ASPCA, The Humane Society, and PETA the laws and views regarding animal abuse have made great strides. Through gaining awareness and the support of volunteers the lives of countless animals have been improved for the better. Now it is your turn to help by joining the cause today.

I think in my future I will still be skateboarding maybe with some sponsors. Have a bachelors degree with a good job. I feel like I will eventually move to a warmer climate maybe Arizona or Colorado. I am not exactly sure what I am going to specialize my degree in. Maybe Astronomy or Physics. Something Science based. I have came to this decision because I get so much enjoyment out of skateboarding, and warmer climate is something I am envious of living in Missouri.

animated story

We watched a video in class and this is from the perspective of the bird.

It was a day like any other. I went out on my afternoon food search down a sunny neighborhood composed of businesses. Men in suites walked the sidewalks and cars drove by quickly on their way. A scent of a fresh bagel stopped me dead in my tracks because bagels just so happen to be my favorite treat. I approached the man who was sitting on a bench below where I was flying. I tried to tell him I was robbing him but he didn't understand. He took one piece off and threw it on the ground, but I didn't come down here to only get a piece. I started to fight him like the thug bird I am. He got a few swats in on me so I backed up and got trapped in this weird suitcase. There were all these bright lights I wonder what happens when I hit this one. Maybe this other button will help me out. Now I get how to control this thing. I'm gonna take this guy out and then that bagel will be mine. Why is he going behind that wall. I tried to make it fly, but it was a lot harder than I thought. It flew all over recklessly and then it got kind of fun. It was like I was playing grand theft auto and I was running from the police. Then I saw him and I tried to go for the kill. Wait, he has the bagel so I surrendered. Then he tried to trick me so I aimed a rocket at him. I thought about it, but I couldn't risk the bagel. Then he threw the bagel and knocked me out of the suitcase. I was in a daze and he took off in the sky with my bagel. He isn't going to get away with this so I flew after him. I caught him without breaking a sweat keeping the image of the bagel in my mind. Time to teach you a lesson I thought. Then just as I go to claw him the bagel starts to fall back towards earth. I was not about to let it get away so I decided I would get my revenge another day.

Final Blog Entry

Reflection:
I thought this was an interesting assignment. I have never blogged before this, but it really wasn't that bad. I didn't know what my reaction would be. I thought it was fun to customize your blog page. Sometime I ran out of stuff to talk about, but the writings we did in class really helped out. I do not think I will continue to blog after this class, but it was fun to mess around with. I didn't really think that I had any huge challenges with this type of project. It got me typing more though and I feel like my typing has probably improved and I have also seen a change in my writings as well. I didn't really have anything that I hated about it. It was pretty straight forward about what we had to do and I like that we could write about anything. I am not really a blogger so this is probably the end of my blogging career.

I Believe Essay
When it comes to life there is one principle that I believe is very important for success and that principle is hard work. According to an article by Simran Khurana, Thomas Edison once said,” Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.”(Quotes about Hard Work) I have seen countless examples throughout my life of how hard work and dedication has paid off for different people. Improving your work ethic can improve your life in many ways; whether it’s at work, your everyday life, or even at school.
At a young age I was introduced to the idea of hard work. When I was growing up my parents separated. I lived with my dad, two older brothers, and twin sister. My dad had to work three jobs to provide for us. Raising four kids could not have been easy, but he was successful because he always worked hard to give us the best he could. He taught me that I should always work for anything that I wanted. In my earlier years before I was old enough to work a legit job I would borrow my dads' lawnmower and go door to door for money. It would take me about an hour depending on the size of the yard and I would earn twenty dollars. Sometimes I would take the lawnmower pretty far just to make some extra money. I associated hard work with material rewards like candy or extra milk money. It felt good to make my own money and be able to buy things. The independence I felt was a direct result of hard work. When I wanted something more expensive I would have to work harder to get my reward. This kind of thinking led me to have an outstanding work ethic that I could take with me to future jobs.
When I was finally able to start working as a legal employee I started working in a restaurant close to my house. The only job they would hire me for is the dishwasher position because I had no experience for anything else. I worked really hard in the dish area for about six months and by that time the kitchen manager had seen my work ethic and decided to move me up to a prep position. I was so happy when I did not have to wash dishes anymore and got to do more things with food. It turned out that I actually really liked to cook. After a while of learning the prep duties, I eventually got to start working on the line doing desserts and salads. I worked my way up from the bottom all the way to the fry, grill, and sauté stations. Hard work allowed me to move up faster and make more money with promotions and raises. However, I also saw fellow employees that would slack off. They would be stuck working the same positions for years. I would not have had the same opportunities if I did not believe in hard work. As I worked in many different kitchens over the years I have always taken my hard working beliefs with me.
Hard work transcended to other aspects of my life. Having a good work ethic helped me to progress and become a better skateboarder. I started out riding my skateboard to school as transportation. As I skated with my friends and learned tricks, I really became passionate about it. I decided I wanted to work hard to be the best skateboarder I could be. I eventually became really good after a lot of hard work and dedication. I wanted to test my new skills and started skating in contests at the Springfield Skate Park. The highlight of contest skating for me is winning first place in the advanced division and also winning the best trick contest in the same day. It felt so good to be rewarded for my hard work. Soon after, a skate shop owner approached me to be on his skate team. I accepted and still ride for 41/7 Skate Shop to this day. As a team we travel to different places to film skateboarding and shoot photos. Currently I am filming a video part and there is a lot of hard work that goes in to the making of a skate video part. Sometimes I fall down, roll my ankle, or even break my board. I always get back up, dust myself off, and go back to get the trick. I am very thankful for these life opportunities that my work ethic has made possible.
Work ethic in School is essential for success. If you want to do well in a class you must do the homework and take time out of your schedule to study for the test. I always got good grades in High School because I would always try my best and I liked the challenge. I knew that if I worked hard someday it would pay off. My senior year in High School I started dual enrolling in Ozarks Technical Community College. I even got A's in all my classes during dual enrollment. Now I am almost done with my Associates Transfer Degree and I have maintained above a 3.7 grade point average. I will be working to get a Bachelors Degree of Science at Missouri State University when I am done. I am also eligible for scholarships as a result of the hard work I have put into my education. Scholarship opportunities made the difference for me continuing my education because without them I might not have been able to afford the tuition. In my future, I will continue down the road I am heading and I know I will be able to do it as long as I continue to believe in hard work. My goal is to get a good education so I can get a really good job and be able to afford the things I want to do in life. According to the Census Bureau, “workers with bachelor’s degrees in 2008 earned about $26,000 more annually on average than workers with a high school diploma.”(census.gov) This statement just reassures my beliefs that hard work will pay off long term.
When it comes to life, hard work and dedication are the tools to get anything that your heart desires. If you want something then you will have to be willing to put in the hard work to get it. I feel like nothing is out of reach. My work ethic has guided my past, present, and will continue to guide my future. Without these principles I would not have any of the things that I have today. I have many friends with good and bad work ethics. I have noticed that the ones that are willing to work hard are happier and in a better place in life in general. Good work ethic can give you opportunities you wouldn’t otherwise have, help you accomplish your dreams, and improve every aspect of your life in a positive way.

Today was a pretty normal day. Wake up not knowing if it will be nice or snowy. Unfortunately today was the later of the two. I missed my first class because I was running late wiping off my car and defrosting the windows. Later in the day I got called back from working at 3 to 4. Then around 3:20 the kitchen manager called me because no one told him they called me back. I got there nothing was done and it was pretty busy. We just scavenged the whole night basically taking care of one ticket at a time. I t was really janky from the start. Nothing was prepped up for the night, the steam table went down in the middle of the night so I had to put everything in the hot box, and they cut everyone expecting it to be really slow. Instead it was really busy and sucked pretty bad. On the positive side my brother just had another kid yesterday and they will be out of the hospital soon. This week has also been kind of stressful with school and work. I want this snow to go away and some nice summer weather to happen. Until then I will keep wishing.

Game of Skate

41/7 skateshop had a Game of Skate the other day at the Springfield Skate Park. It had a pretty good turn out. I am happy that there is a place indoor to skate. We have a really good skate park in town with half indoor and half outdoor. A lot of transitions, some rails, and also stairs. I like to enter skate contests anytime that they are held. I like to push myself and try harder tricks than I normally would. Coming soon is National Go Skateboarding Day. They usually have a contest on that day and over the years I have won a lot of stuff from them. I am even more ready for it to be nice weather and needing to cool of in swimming pools and rivers. Anyways this was a fun contest there were a lot of people playing Skate. Skate is a lot like horse in basketball. When one skateboarder does a trick the other person must do the same trick or face getting a letter until they spell out skate. On the last attempt you are allowed two tries.

Show Don't Tell

Think of a place you would rather be?

I would rather be in a place very far from here. The weather is much nicer and the view is also very beautiful. The view includes mountains in the distance that are snow-capped like wonderful frosted cupcakes. The sun shines brightly onto the glossy reddish concrete. There is a canopy in the center of this place a city skyline around the entire structure. I have been to this place several times in my life each time better than the last. There is a kind of smoky smell everywhere you go because the medical society there is very liberal about treatment of illnesses. You can hear football games in the distance with cheering of fans as athletes perform at a very high level. When I am at this place I feel like I am in a world of my own. There is no sadness, fear, or worry in this place. Only meditation, focus, and fun. I would make sure to bring my skateboard if I go to this place with some skate shoes.

Senses:
Sight- Buildings, mountains, open spaces, red concrete, a canopy, sunshine, blue skies, grass, trees.
Hear- Football fans, wheels of skateboards, trucks grinding, people talking.
Taste- Fresh crisp mountain air, energy drinks, blood if you fall really hard haha.
Smell- The air smells more crisp, some of the skaters smoke medical marijuana which can be pretty smelly, other than that there is not too much else to smell.
Touch- Smooth concrete, jagged angles of metal for grinding, rough grip tape, all walks of life, reflective building windows, cool breeze, benches, a weird little sculpture made of metal.

Corrected description:

Ive been to this place several times each time better than the last. This place is far away from home. In the distance I see mountains and the air smells clean and crisp. On the other side I see endless buildings and open space with a cool breeze washing over me. I see a mass of smooth red concrete with curves and sharp angles with a canopy in the center. I can hear skateboarders grinding and wheels flying around me. I feel rough grip tape and taste energy drinks as I spend time here. I hear friends talking and laughing. I see a glare from the buildings reflecting the sunlight and blue skies. I can also hear fans screaming at a distant football game with the scent of medical marijuana being smoked by sick people. This place represents freedom in its' purest form.

Short Writings

I feel... (emotion)
I feel glad to be inside because outside feels like Antarctica! I feel fortunate to be in a place like the United States where my standard of living is very high. If it was cold like this in an undeveloped country it would be miserable. You would be cold and hungry neither of which I am fond of. Having said that I am glad it is wednesday because today I got my income tax return. It is all pretty much going to be spent, but it feels like a weight is being lifted off my shoulders when debt gets paid off. I'm happy that I do not have to worry about paying those things off. Yesterday was a good day. I went to the skate park for a little while and made a really good dinner.

I think... (hypothesis/reason/logic)
I think that I am not a big fan of writing sometimes. I would rather go watch some skate videos or anything really. I would rather go to the gym and get a good workout in. I would rather watch a movie. I think that cold weather is miserable. I think that Jodi Arias killed her ex boyfreind out of jealousy and will get convicted of first degree murder. There is just too much evidence against her. My dad has been watching the trial on television and I have watched some of the highlights. I think that typing could be a form of torture in some countries. I think that if you are planning on going outside today you better wear a jacket. I think that the deep ocean is sketchy because there could be giant things down there.

I believe... (convinced-evidence, emotion, and reasoning)
I believe everyone need personal time to relax and reflect on life. Everyone needs days off from time to time. I believe the breakfast burrito I had for breakfast today was pretty tasty. I believe that no one will read this blog. I believe that aliens exist somewhere in the universe. I believe I will probably go to the gym today after this class. I believe that big foot was a prank. I believe that I will move somewhere warmer someday. I believe I will probably skateboard for the rest of my life. I believe that I am rambling on with no order or sense of where I am going. That is all.

I know...
I know everything obviously. I know the capitol of most the states in the United States of America. I know the freezing temperature of water is near 32 degrees. I know the human body stays homeostatic at 98.7 degrees. I know that chicken must be placed on the bottom of all proteins. I know that summer is warm and full of happiness. I know that plants produce there own food, which makes them autotrophs. They photosynthesize to create atp. I know that fermentation is a lot less efficient then cellular respiration. I know that no one believes me that I know everything because that would be impossible.

Vocabulary Story

Once upon a time there was a rich Amish dude that loved Mexican food. He always wore his Amish hat and a pair of boots. One day he saw a person driving a truck with a Cummins engine in it. He got super jelly. He wanted it so bad and his daughters giggled at him for it. He looked on craigslist to find one of his own. It is what it is he thought, “Maybe I will never have one.” He was acting a bit wonky the next day as he thought about it while he was making some butter. He took a bath with bubbles after he was done with his hard day of work and slipped into his own abyss. He was a very earthy fellow that lived life the fungo way. One day his grandpa died and he inherited his truck. He was so stoked at how gnarly the truck was he went mudding in it right away. He went to show his best friend his new truck. He concluded, “Isn’t this an awesome truck bruh?” His friend calmly replied, “Yeah that’s straight”. They both went hunting together every summer in that truck for the rest of their years.

Object Free Write Round 2

This time I got a Joker card.
I think this is an interesting object I am a fan of poker and I play sometimes with my freinds for cash. In some card games the joker can be a wild card too. I can relate to that because I consider myself kind of a wild card. In the sense that I am spontaneous and unpredictable. I never say or do what people expect out of me I like to do things my way instead. Sometimes I do things for my own personal entertainment even if nobody else gets it. That is just the kind of person I am and that is kind of how I think about life. I really hate it when people expect you to do or say certain things because I do not like to be around people that push their will on you or try to control me. This joker card also reminds me of the character in the Batman movies. And then I think of the wacko in Colorado that shot up the movie premeire dressed up as the joker. I really dont understand the motivation to do something so aweful like that. I could never imagine having to go through something like that and I feel sorry for the families that had their loved ones killed or injured for someone elses amusement. It is just a reminder of how cold and dark this world can be. Me personally, I like to believe in the good of people. Things that happen like this just make me wonder. I have seen enough television shows like criminal minds and it makes me think that some people just are born sick. When I was younger I used to think that people were a product of their environment, but now I kind of believe that some people were never right to start out with. How great would it be if we had a way to detect them before they acted out in these mass murders.

In class today, we had to randomly draw an object from a box. I got a silver plastic beaded necklace. I am not really sure what I can write about it. It may remind me of some holidays involving beads like Mardi Gra. I am a fan of the holiday originating in New Orleans. It is a reason to party with good freinds or go watch all the crazy drunk people at the pub crawls. The tradition of giving beads away is rather interesting as well. Someday I would like to go to Louisiana for this holiday to see the traditional Bourbon Street festivities. I think that beaded necklaces are also customary of many other holidays like New Years Eve. Normally I have to work on New Years Eve, but this past year I changed jobs and had it off. It was fun because the restauraunt I work at now closes early on that day so I got to go out with my girlfriend and other freinds. We went to this party that was close to downtown and waited for midnight and I popped a champagne bottle. It was kind of funny because it didn't actually pop the first time it just started to emit smoke and then I tried to take a drink of it and then the carbonation made it fizzle. It ended up spilling a little bit on my shirt, but what can you do except for laugh. We ended up leaving that party to go to another one where more of my friends where there so naturally it was more fun. We stayed there all night and I think it was my favorite New Years Eve of all. So when I look at this beaded necklace that I put around my neck I think of good memories with freinds and holidays past. It is pretty interesting how people can associate so much with an object and instantly remember those times.

Personal Credo

This is a statement about my unique approach at life for an essay in this class.

-I feel that I have had a humble upbringing, I grew up in Springfield, MO. I also lived in Denver, CO. When I was younger I acted out just as any other youth would. My childhood was pretty normal. I was the middle child and had two older brothers, a twin sister, and a little sister that lives in CO. I always worked hard in school and have continued to incorporate hard work into my routine. As I have gotten older I came to college and made above a 3.7 g.p.a. I work out really hard in the gym atleast 3 times a week and skateboard in my free time. I am on the team at a local skateshop where I put work in at filming tricks and video parts. I also work full time as a line cook for income and have been doing that line of work for about 5 years now. I have had good experiences and bad experiences and have learned a lot about myself in the process. As my approach to life goes I am very dedicated, outgoing, and know how to enjoy the little things. I am financially independent and have goals I am working towards achieving. I love all my family and freinds that support me and for the most part I just enjoy life. I am very athletic and am constantly on the go. I am also really into art including drawing, painting, photography, and videography.

Wind Power Solution to Global Energy Crisis

The global problem of running out of energy to sustain the world-wide populations’ needs has scientists looking for alternative renewable energy sources that have the lowest impact on the environment.  The fastest growing type of sustainable energy is wind turbines. It has become America’s most famous landscape of power. Wind power seems like a perfect solution to the energy crisis because it creates no global impact, contaminates no soil, and leaves no permanent or dangerous waste.
In an article in the Journal of Geographic Review, Martin J. Pasqualetti describes wind power as a realistic solution to the worlds growing energy need. He also brings up the dilemma of the costs of creating these turbines with low environmental impacts, and the cheaper initial costs of burning nuclear and fossil fuels with a high environmental impact. This debate has an easy solution when you think long term. The turbines will eventually pay for themselves and the reward of lowering the human population’s impact of the environment makes the investment worth it.
The only flaw of Wind power is the space that the turbines take up which led to public opposition.  The public view of wind turbines is that it takes up too much space and it ruins the scenery of the landscape in those locations. According to Mr. Pasqualetti, “Modern development of wind power has been called a new way to rape the countryside. “ (Morality, Space, and the Power of Wind-Energy Landscapes) The public should change their way of thinking to consider all the advantages to this clean energy.
When power is extracted from fossil fuels it must first be refined, which takes time and money. A facility is built to refine the fossil fuels into different grades of oil and gasoline. In wind power, there is no refinery process which makes the electricity more efficient to produce. The turbines can be set up and taken down easily and can be placed in distant locations far away from populated areas. Currently fossil fuels supply 85-90 percent of the nation’s electricity demands.  And according to Paqualetti, “An area about the size of New Jersey – could satisfy 20 percent of the nation’s demand for electricity. “ (Morality, Space, and the Power of Wind-Energy Landscapes)
It is no question that the world’s supply of fossil fuels will eventually run out. When this happens we will have to start finding other ways to supply our electricity needs. We need to think about the future and choose energy that has less of a global impact on the environment. Wind power is a great solution to this problem because of its efficiency, non-polluting, and renewable characteristics.
